Live Cereal

Live Cereal

This cereal is light and delicious, perfect for the heat of a summer morning. Whether you're just curious to try something new, or aiming to eat healthier, this is a great versatile option for a delicious breakfast. The base for this recipe is oat groats, (which are just oat kernels with the skin removed, so they're easier to digest). The oat groats are soaked in water overnight along with any seeds or nuts that you like. Drain in the morning and add any fruit you like, or even some crunchy, un-soaked nuts and enjoy. My recent favorite addition is some frozen passion fruit juice, which adds a wonderful brightness to the morning meal (check it out in this Summer Thirst Quenchers post). I sometimes soak a few servings of the groats and pumpkin seeds and then keep them in the fridge for another day. They seem to last for a day or two, and I just rinse them in fresh water before using.

I have been keeping this pretty simple with oat groats and pumpkin seeds, and whatever nuts I have around. You can also add sunflower seeds, flax or chia seeds (soaked or dry)....or any other grain or seed that inspires you. Oat groats are available in most health food stores, and some grocery stores. If you can't find them, you might also try soaking some nuts and seeds that you like, draining them and mixing with dry or toasted rolled oats and fruit. I feel great after eating this, I hope you do too!

Live Cereal
makes 2 servings
3/4 cup oat groats
1/4 cup raw pumpkin seeds
1/4 almonds or other nuts (I soak almonds, but like most other nuts un-soaked, this is entirely up to you)

  1. Soak oat groats, pumpkin seeds and nuts in water over night at room temperature.
  2. Drain grains and seeds. Add any fruit you like. A splash of juice or some crunchy un-soaked nuts or seeds are also wonderful.  Enjoy as is or add yogurt if you like.
